Love for Las Cruces
GET TO KNOW BILL
Originally from Long Island, New York, William “Bill” Mattiace has called Las Cruces his home for the past 50 years. Upon his arrival in Las Cruces, Bill immediately began his commitment to community service while studying Elementary Education at New Mexico State University. Bill founded the Las Cruces Vocational College in 1976, which eventually evolved into the Doña Ana Community College. His path took him to Wallace Chevrolet, and later to the Sisbarro dealerships, where he was one of the top sales professionals in the region.
After graduating from the General Motors School of Finance, Bill realized his passion for helping people- in this case with a set of keys. While working with his wife Wanda, the owner of Adventure Travel, he caught the itch for politics and protecting small businesses (although, ask him about his hot dog truck sometime). The Las Cruces City Council elected him to serve District Two in 1999 for one four-year term, and in a special election in 2003 he was elected to the position of Mayor of Las Cruces. His commitment to transparent government and integrated community got him re-elected the following November, serving until 2007. Bill is honored and humbled to have worked as a public servant for the people of Las Cruces for nearly ten years.
He then transitioned back to the private sector, working for the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce as the Vice President of Governmental Affairs. Bill was the Executive Director of the New Mexico Border Authority from 2010-2018– the state agency managing border infrastructure and commerce at New Mexico’s three busy ports of entry.
Bill prides himself on always putting family first, and has three children of whom he is immensely proud. Lauren, his youngest, earned her degree in biology from New Mexico State University and is currently attending Vanderbilt University in the accelerated Family Nurse Practitioner program. His middle child, William, is a former television journalist and now works in communications for Nissan. Michelle, his eldest, is an attorney with Children Youth and Families Department in southern New Mexico. Michelle added three wonderful grandchildren to the mix: Lila, Jack, and Luke.
He has been married to the incredible Wanda Nicolitz Mattiace for almost 50 years. Wanda has been in Las Cruces since she was 5 years old and is a first-generation immigrant raised in “Chiva Town”. She is a successful small business owner, a wonderful mother, and an invaluable member of the community.
